New Community Vision Plots Guided Community Tours Of Former Timber Shores Property
By Craig Manning, Leelanau Ticker
The nonprofit organization working to acquire and preserve 200-plus acres of land near Northport is hoping to build more community buy-in around that process this summer with a series of guided walking tours of the property. The first of those walks are scheduled for this coming week, with other similar opportunities to follow over the next month.
The Leelanau Ticker broke the news a year ago that New Community Vision (NCV), a then-newly-formed nonprofit, had an option to purchase land previously earmarked for the development of a sprawling RV resort called Timber Shores. Negative community reaction to the Timber Shores proposal – and a failed referendum vote – had derailed developers’ plans to put 355 RV sites and 15 tent sites on the property in 2022. NCV hopes to utilize the land as a publicly accessible nature preserve and the home of a small attainable housing development, among other potential uses.
